Frequently asked questions

  • Yes.

We do not use any animal products in the production of our wines. We allow all our wines to rest which means the wine is naturally fined by time and gravity.

  • Yes.

We became certified organic with BioGro NZ in 2011. However, we’ve practiced organics a long time before that certification became official.

We use biodynamic principles across much of our farming practice and we live on the same site as our vines so we respect the flora and fauna that we share this place with. We felt early on that there was no place for harmful chemicals at Huia.

  • Yes — minimal amounts.

We apply small trace elements of sulphur at bottling. We do this so we can be assured the wine is in its best shape when it arrives with you. We are conscious of sulphur use and aim to use as little as possible.

  • We think so.

It depends on your definition of what a natural wine is. We practice biodynamics in the vineyard, we are certified organic, we hand-harvest where possible and we practice minimal intervention winemaking. We aim to allow wild yeasts endemic to Huia start our ferments and only inoculate with organic yeasts if required. We don’t fine our wines instead allowing time and gravity to do that naturally.

In our view, that’s pretty low fi and natural.

We support the innovation that the natural wine movement brings to our industry and relish robust discussion over a glass of good wine!

  • Yes.

The carbon cost of making wine is relatively low when it comes to emissions — especially when you farm organically and with biodynamics as we do.

However, the largest carbon emission aspect of the wine industry is the manufacture and freight involved with the glass bottles.

We have used the lightest weight bottles possible for our wines and always consciously aim to find solutions to reduce our carbon emissions both in our vineyard, winery and how we get our wine to you.

  • We’re very proud to share our wines with our friends and family at home in New Zealand and in many different countries around the world.
